Regional Coffees

In addition to our fine estate coffees WCSC is proud to offer some of the finest regional coffees available in the world. Whether because of national policies, economics, or commercial volatility, the coffees from many regions can have wide variances from season to season. These coffees demand careful cupping. WCSC carefully inspects and evaluates each lot to insure that only true specialty quality coffees are provided to our clients. .

One example of the extra lengths we have gone to is illustrated with our Kenya experience below. But whether it’s Kenya coffee or any other region rest assured West Coast Specialty Coffee is always on the front line of quality.

Kenya coffee is an easy coffee to fall in love with. At its best it resides in that airy realm of high acidity, floral aromas, and berrylike flavor undertones. Several years ago we had the privilege tohave three young men from Nairobi attend one of our coffee workshops. Their dream was to open a cafe with on premises roasting and present to the Nairobi population a taste of the best of Kenyas' coffees. Driven by their vision and with much sweat and effort, Nairobi Coffee House was born. After a couple years of success the owners approached us with the idea of working together to secure the best of Kenya coffees for West Coast Specialty Coffee. Well anyone who knows us is aware of the importance we place on cupping. There really is no substitute. The challenge with Kenya is how to do this effectively prior to the auction in which all the coffees for export are presented for sale. A conundrum that usually requires importers to rely on local facilities to perform the evaluations. But hey, we're in the world of Absolutely, Positively, Have To Have It Overnight! So with our friends at Nairobi Java House we have arranged to have lots of every AA and AB grade samples delivered to our offices in California to be cupped and selected prior to coming up for auction. The results are an enormous round of cupping to select only the best and provide them to our customers at competitive prices. To illustrate, over three auction rounds we cupped 148 samples, selecting from those our finalists and then cupping the finalists a second time (with four cups each on the first round and ten! cups each for the finalists). Only then do we give our selections to our Nairobi partners who bid on our behalf at the auction. A lot of effort? You bet! But that's what it takes for us to secure the finest of Kenya coffees that are flavorful, consistent, and priced competitively against any importer in the world. We do it because we have pride in what we do and because we want to insure that our customers get the best of specialty coffees. Call us to sample our current Kenya offerings. You'll be glad you did.
